Sapphires - Australia and Sri Lanka*

Description

My collection of small Corundum var. Sapphires. The ones in back are from Ratnapura, Sabaragamuwa, Sri Lanka. A friend has informed me that the blue banding on that thin crystal in back is called 'Otto' locally in Sri Lanka and that it may also have come from nearby Okkympitiya. The ones in front are alluvial crystals from near Black Springs, Oberon, NSW, Australia, and came from a trade with a very gracious aussie fossicker.

Aussie Sapphires tend to be darkly blue, sometimes even too dark... and were basically naturally 'heat treated' while being carried up to the surface by lava (after having been already formed deep underground). Sapphires from most other famous locations around the world are not associated with lava, and are instead found eroding out of the pegmatites, marbles & schists that they were originally formed in.
